Choosing a new plan on the Upgrade / Downgrade page ends with your browser being sent to a payment provider and back again, and where it lands you (a success page, a failure page, or back on your existing plan) is not always obvious. This article explains what actually happens the moment you confirm a plan change, what changes on your subscription and when, and what each result page means for your account.
It does not cover choosing between Starter, Business and Scale or configuring add-ons; that comparison lives on the Upgrade / Downgrade page itself. It also does not cover invoices or cancelling; see Plans and Billing for those.
Confirm a plan change
- Open Account Settings, choose Plan & Billing, then select Upgrade / Downgrade on your subscription card. Your subscription card also carries an Update Payment Method button when your payment provider supports it. See Update the card you pay with for that flow.
- Configure the column for the plan you want. See What happens the instant you select Upgrade for what usage will block a plan change.
- Select Upgrade in that column.
For the Starter and Business columns, selecting Upgrade is the same confirm action whether you are moving to a larger plan or a smaller one. Qoblex does not have a separate “downgrade” button or confirmation step.
Selecting Upgrade in the Scale column is different: it opens a confirmation dialog headed Custom Billing Plan. If Qoblex has not set up a Scale offer for your account, the dialog reads No Scale offer has been set up for your account. Please contact support to arrange your Scale plan. and its own Upgrade button stays disabled. You cannot confirm a Scale plan change until support has configured an offer for you.
What happens the instant you select Upgrade
Before anything is charged, Qoblex runs two checks:
- It checks the plan you configured against what your account is currently using: orders, integrations, API/mobile/B2B access, and, only when you are moving to Starter, users and warehouse locations. If your usage does not fit, the request is refused with an error naming the specific limit you have exceeded and how much of it you are currently using.
- If you configured the Scale column, Qoblex also checks that a Scale offer is configured for your account. Without one, the request is refused with No Scale offer has been configured for this account. Please contact support to set up your Scale plan.
Either refusal appears as a red error banner above the plan comparison table on the Upgrade / Downgrade page, and nothing else in this section happens.
If the checks pass, Qoblex immediately cancels your current subscription at your payment provider, before it opens the new checkout.
Your browser is then sent to the payment provider to approve the new charge.
Upgrading and downgrading change your subscription the same way
There is no “takes effect at the end of the period” option for a downgrade, and no partial credit for an upgrade made partway through a billing cycle. Once the payment provider confirms the new charge, Qoblex replaces every plan-defining value on your subscription in one step, whether you moved up or down. There is no gradual or deferred change, and no grace period during which a downgraded feature keeps working. Everything below switches to the new configuration at the same moment:
- Plan
- Orders-per-year allowance
- Integration count
- API, mobile and B2B access
- Lot, Serial and Expiry Date tracking
Your account’s Expires on date is also replaced: Qoblex sets it to the end of the new billing period reported or calculated from what your payment provider returns, plus a 2-day grace period, the same grace window applied on every renewal.
Approve the payment
What happens next depends on how your account is billed. See How Qoblex decides who bills you for how Qoblex decides which applies to you.
- Paid by card: you approve the new charge with your payment provider. Qoblex then reads back the confirmed subscription’s billing-period end and applies it as described above. If your card is declined, that is handled entirely on the payment provider’s own page — you are not sent back to a Qoblex page at all. If you close or cancel the checkout instead, your browser is sent back to a Qoblex address that does not open a usable page. Either way, go back to Account Settings, then Plan & Billing, and reopen Upgrade / Downgrade to try again.
- Billed through Shopify: you approve a new recurring charge in your Shopify admin. Qoblex reads back the date Shopify activated the charge and calculates the new period end from it. If you decline the charge in Shopify admin, Shopify returns you to Qoblex and you land on the Oops ! page below.
When a payment succeeds or fails
The Success page
Once Qoblex has applied your new plan, you land on a page headed Success, reading Your subscription has successfully been updated. Two buttons sit beneath it: View Subscription, which returns you to Plan & Billing, and Go to Dashboard, which takes you back to work.
The Oops! page: what a failed payment means for your account
If Qoblex could not complete your subscription update after you returned from the payment provider, you land on a page headed Oops ! with the message We could not update your subscription. and the advice Try upgrading again or contact support using the widget at the bottom right of the page. A single Try again button returns you to Plan & Billing.
Reaching this page means Qoblex could not complete the update after you were sent to the payment provider. It is not what you see if you simply abandon a card checkout part-way through; see Approve the payment for what happens on a card-billed account if you close the checkout or decline the charge instead.
This is the screen a worried customer lands on, so here is what you can rely on:
- In almost every case, your plan, your features and your Expires on date are all unchanged: Qoblex only replaces those values after the payment provider confirms the new charge, and in almost every case that confirmation is exactly what failed to arrive. If your bank statement or Shopify admin shows a charge for the new plan but Qoblex still shows your old plan, contact support with the date and amount instead of repeating the upgrade, which would start a second charge.
- You keep working normally until the Expires on date already on your account, exactly as before you started the plan change.
- Your previous subscription was already cancelled at the payment provider the moment you selected Upgrade (see the callout in What happens the instant you select Upgrade), and landing here does not undo that. Your access in Qoblex is unaffected until Expires on, but there is no longer a recurring charge behind it. Reopen Upgrade / Downgrade and finish choosing a plan before that date, or nothing is set up to renew automatically.
If you cancel instead of changing plans
Cancelling your subscription, using the Cancel Plan button on your plan card, is a different flow from changing plans, and takes you to a separate confirmation page opening with We’re sorry that you’ve canceled your account. That page, what it means for your data and your access, and how to undo a cancellation, are covered in full in Plans and Billing.
Troubleshooting
Will I be charged twice, once for my old plan and once for my new one?
I downgraded and expected a refund or credit for the unused part of my old plan
The Oops! page doesn’t tell me what went wrong
It shows the same message regardless of the reason Qoblex could not complete the update. Select Try again and reopen Upgrade / Downgrade; if it keeps happening, contact support using the widget at the bottom right of the page.
If your card was declined, that is handled entirely on the payment provider’s own page and you are not sent to the Oops! page at all. If you closed a card checkout without finishing, your browser is sent back to a Qoblex address that does not open a usable page — you will not see the Oops! page either. Either way, go back to Account Settings, then Plan & Billing, yourself and reopen Upgrade / Downgrade. On a Shopify-billed account, declining the charge in Shopify admin does return you to the Oops! page.
